Nautical guestroom with built in bunks for grandchildren

A well-designed bedroom with a bunk bed. The bed is painted in white and features a ladder with a rope handle. The top bunk has striped bedding, while the bottom bunk has a checkered pattern. Both beds are adorned with striped and checkered pillows. On the wall, there are two framed decorative items resembling ship wheels. The room has a deep blue wall color, and there's a window on the right side, allowing natural light to enter.

When my husband and I were looking for a winter place in Florida, we saw so many model homes I lost count however, one thing that stayed with me was a model house that had a guestroom with built-in bunkbeds . There were actually four of them, two on each side of the room, so you could accommodate four grandchildren . At this point, my children weren’t even married never mind grandchildren but I’ll never forget how beautiful I thought this idea was and practical as well. It’s many many years later, so far I have two grandchildren and we settled on a coach house about 10 years ago. There are three bedrooms and my goal would be someday to build or have somebody build some bunkbeds for the kids as they grow. Imagine my surprise when I found out you can buy something like this on Amazon. So if you’re like me and you have champagne taste and a budget for beer this may be the solution for you as well.    I’m going to link some of my favorite finds that just may get me to that room that I’ve been dreaming about for all these years.

Setting the Scene with Nautical Decor

When it comes to nautical decor, think of elements that capture the essence of the sea. You want your grandchildren to feel like they’re stepping into a beachside cabin. Here are some key ideas to get you started: bunk beds for the grandkids  is just the thing!

Colors that Speak the Language of the Sea

A nautical room’s foundation begins with colors that reflect the ocean. Consider using shades of blue, white, and sandy beige. These colors evoke the calming and refreshing feel of the coast. You might paint the walls a soft sea blue and use white for the trim to bring in a clean, airy vibe.

Accessories that Spark Adventure

Accessorizing with nautical-themed items is where the fun begins! Think ship wheels, anchors, and ropes. You can hang a ship wheel above the bunks or use rope as curtain tiebacks. Don’t forget to add a few seashells and starfish around the room to complete the look.

Fabric Choices for Coastal Comfort

For the beds, choose bedding with stripes or patterns reminiscent of beach towels. Cotton and linen are great fabric choices as they add to the cozy, breezy feel of the room. Throw pillows with nautical prints or motifs like sailboats or marine life can add a playful touch.

Designing Built-in Bunks

Built-in bunks are not just a space saver; they’re a playground for your grandchildren’s imaginations. Here’s how to design the perfect built-in bunks for your nautical guestroom:

Crafting the Perfect Nook

When deciding where to build the bunks, consider a corner or an alcove in the room. This allows for a snug, cozy feeling. Use sturdy materials like wood to ensure safety and longevity.

Adding Nautical Details

Incorporate nautical elements into the bunks themselves. You can add porthole windows on the side panels or use a ladder with rope rungs for an authentic seafaring vibe. Paint the bunks in a crisp white or navy blue to match the room’s color scheme.

Safety and Comfort First

Safety is always a priority. Make sure the bunks have secure railings and a stable ladder. For comfort, choose quality mattresses and add a plush mattress topper. Don’t forget to add reading lights or fairy lights to create a warm, inviting space.

Infusing Personality with Personalized Touches

Personalizing the room with elements that reflect your grandchildren’s personalities will make them feel truly at home.

Creating a Mini Gallery

Use one wall to create a gallery of their artwork or photos from family beach trips. This not only adds a personal touch but also makes the room uniquely theirs.

A Reading Nook for Little Explorers

If space permits, add a small reading nook with a comfy chair or beanbag. Stock it with books about the sea, pirates, and ocean adventures to inspire their imaginations.

DIY Crafts for a Custom Feel

Try adding some DIY projects, like a custom headboard featuring a map of the ocean. You could also make a hand-painted sign with their names in fun nautical letters. These personal touches will make the room feel special and loved.

Adding the Final Touches

To complete the transformation of your guestroom into a nautical haven, add some finishing touches that tie everything together.

Lighting that Sets the Mood

Choose lighting fixtures that complement the nautical theme. A pendant light resembling a ship’s lantern or a table lamp with a base made from driftwood can add to the coastal charm.

Rugs and Curtains for Coziness

Select rugs and curtains that enhance the room’s theme. A striped rug or one with waves can add warmth. Sheer curtains let natural light fill the room, making it feel airy.

Bringing Nature Indoors

Consider adding a few plants to the room. A small palm or a succulent in a beach-themed pot can bring a bit of the outdoors inside, making the room feel fresh and lively.

Conclusion

Making a nautical guestroom with built-in bunks for your grandkids is a fun project. It’s also a great way to create lasting memories! With these ideas, you can create a space that is both useful and pretty. Your grandchildren will have a place that feels like a home away from home. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your materials, and let your creativity sail!

Remember, the best rooms are those filled with love, laughter, and a touch of the sea breeze. Happy decorating!“`
